Greetings from the Al-Hakim Mosque in the neighborhood called "Islamic Cairo". Islamic Cairo is a historic area in Cairo, Egypt, renowned for its wealth of Islamic architecture, landmarks, and cultural heritage. It encompasses a significant portion of the city's historic core, characterized by narrow winding streets, bustling markets, and impressive mosques, madrasas, and monuments dating back to the Islamic period.
Finally: Our Egypt Travel Video from March this year is online. The video has been ready since a month but Internet was never strong enough to upload it. In the hotel eventually, I could upload video (12 hours). Enjoy watching, leave comments ;)
This will be the last post about Egypt before moving eventually to Burkina Faso. However, I´d like to share my experience from Cairo first. The capital of Egypt is huge. It´s busy. It´s noisy and, yes, it´s dirty. But what to expect from a city with over 20 million citizens? Downtown area, close to the Tahir Square, has thousands of shops. There is not a thing that you cannot get here. We stayed first in "One Season Hotel" in Downtown but is was dirty like nothing else. It smelled like hell...
Back in Cairo, we went straight to see the Pyramids. And to let you know from the beginning: Don't expect to drive to the lonely desert for hours to eventually discover those magical pyramids. No, its completely different. After 2 hours traffic jam from Cairo, you reach the neighborhood Giza where the pyramids slowly arise behind skyscrapers, adverts and a big McDonald sign. Welcome to one of the seven wonders of the world. Covered in dust and accompanied by the noise from the nearby traffic....
Maybe the most exciting things I wanted to see in Suez is the famous Suez Canal. The canal is an artificial waterway through Egypt that was officially opened 1869. It is the fastest shipping route between Europe and Asia. Without the Suez Canal, ships would need to go all the way around Africa in order to reach India for instance. Ships sail trough it in convoys of about 40 in a row to avoid piracy. The canal opens six hours for ships going north to south and then six hours for the other...
"What do you want to see in Suez?", people asked me again and again. "I don't know, I'd like to sit in a cafe and watch the city-life", I answered. "But what do you want to see?" I don't know but that's the reason why I'm going. And it was the right decision!
Yap, I have to admit, watching Tobias surfing is fun but watching the sea without him is boring. Unfortunately there hasn't been enough wind for kite surfers and then even the best spot in the world becomes tiring. Writing diary and listening to music was satisfying for a few days but now I need a change. I suddenly felt this big desire to see more in Egypt than this one hotel. Yeah this place is nice - I'm not questioning it - I think I just want to experience the freedom of going somewhere...
Bassam from the Kitesurf School mentioned the hot springs around Ras Sudr. A day later we are sitting on a truck and are taken by the Bedouin Ramadan and his brother to a night bathing session. Fourty minutes through the desert underneath a wonderful sky full of stars on a bumpy dusty road - loved it. The place itself looks rather unspectacular: a pond filled with incredible hot water, some trees (very unique in that desert) and a smell of sulfur. It is being told, that the British found this...
A little change from our daily lazy-routine was the trip to the city center of Ras Sudr, 30 minutes drive from the hotel. Arriving in the city we quickly realised there is no tourist infrastructure, no english-speaking people and even the official bilingual language policy of Arabic AND English changed into only Arabic. Exactly how I like it :). The city is small, there are a few mobilephone shops, supermarkets, drug stores. The plenty cafes, tea shops and restaurant give the city cozy flair. I...
Egypt offers a various amount of excellent places for kitesurfing. Some of the best spots worldwide are for instance: El Gouna, Hurghada, Dahab or Soma bay. The spot where we are, Ras Sudr, is characterised by its two lagoons. The main lagoon is filled with enough water even during low-tide, so you can literally surf whenever you want and surfers are not depending on tides. Just to throw-in some names: Aaron Hadlow and Matchu Lopes have been here for a session ;) This kitesurf school, in Ras...
