The Attari/Wagah Border is a famous crossing point between India and Pakistan. Every single evening this place becomes spot for a crazy and truly unique parade to celebrate the peace and friendship between both countries, but of course also their independence from British colonial rulers. In this article I am going to answer all the questions about the  Attari-Wagah-Border-Ceremony in order to plan your visit accurately.

Indien und Pakistan blicken auf eine eher gewaltvolle gemeinsame Vergangenheit. Obwohl sie lingustische und histroische Gegebenhieten verbinden, haben sie auch drei Kriege gegeneinander ausgetragen, und einige religiös-mottivierte Massaker auf beiden Seiten ertragen müssen. Das Gebiet Kashmir ist noch immer ein Konfliktpunkt für beide Länder. Nichtsdestotrotz bestehen diplomatische Verbindungen und auch Friedensveträge zwischen beiden Ländern. Die Parade feiert den Frieden, die Freundschaft, und versucht diesen Zwigespaltene Verhältnis mit Tanz, Gesang und Anheizen der ZuschauerInnen dieses Gefühl zum Ausdruck zu bringen.

ENG India and Pakistan have shared a rather violent past. Although they combine linguistic and historical facts, they have also fought three wars against each other and endured some religiously-motivated massacres on both sides. The Kashmir region is still a point of conflict for both countries. Nevertheless, there are diplomatic connections and peace treaties between the two countries. The parade celebrates peace, friendship, and tries to express this dichotomy with dance, song and cheering on the spectators.

Höhepunkt ist mit Abstand das Öffnen des schweren Grenz-Tores und das Einholen der jeweiligen Nationalflaggen. Doch die zwei Stunden zuvor sollte man nicht missen. Zusammen mit rund weiteren tausenden Zuschauerinnen sitzt man praktisch wie im Stadium. Man kann Popcorn und Fahnen kaufen. SoldatInnen marschieren, Einheizer animieren das Publikum, ein Orchestra heizt mit rhythmischer Trommelmusik zusätzlich ein. Auf beiden Seiten werden mehr oder weniger die gleichen Programmpunkte abgearbeitet. Die ZuschauerInnen erfreuen sich, wenn auf indischer Seite ein Soldat zu langsam marschiert oder das Seil von der Fahne verdreht hat. Die Zuschauertribüne auf indischer Seite fasst 25.000 Menschen. Auf pakistanischer Seite ist es etwas weniger, aber nicht weniger laut.

ENG The highlight by far is the opening of the heavy border gate and the hauling in of the respective national flags. But you shouldn't miss the two hours beforehand. Together with around thousands of other spectators, you practically sit like you are in a stadium. You can buy popcorn and flags. Soldiers march, heaters animate the audience, an orchestra heats up with rhythmic drum music. More or less the same program points are processed on both sides. The spectators are delighted when a soldier on the Indian side marches too slowly or twists the rope from the flag. The spectator stand on the Indian side holds 25,000 people. On the Pakistani side, it's a little less, but not less noisy.

Das Spektakel findet rund 40 Minuten Fahrt von Lahore statt. Die Grenze auf pakistanischer Seite heißt "Attari". Wagah ist der Name der Stadt auf indischer Seite, den ich zuerst in meiner Taxi-App angegeben hatte. Dies führte dann während der Fahrt aber zu technischen Problemen mit dem Fahrer und seiner App, sodass ich den Endpunkt ändern musste. Theoretisch kann man mit Uber, oder Careem zu der Grenze fahren. Allerdings muss man beachten, dass 5KM vor der Grenze das Internet nicht mehr funktioniert. Euer Fahrer kann den Trip dann nicht beenden. Es gibt verschiedene Möglichkeiten das zu lösen:

• Ihr steigt da aus, wo noch Internet ist und lauft den rest....ca. 2 KM

• Ihr vertraut dem Fahrer, dass er, wenn er euch abgesetzt hat, zurückfährt und den Trip schnellstmöglich beendet.

• Ihr bittet den Fahrer zu warten und euch wieder mit zurück zu nehmen. Pro Warteminute zahlt man 7 PKR (3 Euro-Cent / 0,03 Euro)

Letzte Variante ist praktisch, da euer Fahrer dann an dem Parkplatz warten darf, der am nächsten zu Grenze liegt, und ihr nur noch 1km Fußweg habt. Auf dem Rückweg müsst ihr sonst ziemlich weit in den Menschenmassen zu Fuß laufen, bis man zu einer öffentlichen Bushaltestelle oder Taxistand kommt.

Natürlich kann man über das Hotel auch generell einen privaten Fahrer organisieren, der zu einem Festpreis wartet!

ENG The spectacle takes place around 40 minutes drive from Lahore. The border on the Pakistani side is called "Attari". Wagah is the name of the city on the Indian side that I put in my taxi app first. However, this led to technical problems with the driver and his app while driving, so I had to change the end point. Theoretically you can take Uber or Careem to the border. However, one must note that 5KM before the border, the Internet no longer works. Your driver will then not be able to end the trip. There are different ways to solve this:

•     You get off where there is still internet and walk the rest....approx. 2KM
• You trust the driver that once he has dropped you off, he will drive back and end the trip as soon as possible.
• You ask the driver to wait and take you back. You pay 7 PKR per waiting minute (3 euro cents / 0.03 euro)

The last variant is practical because your driver can then wait at the parking lot that is closest to the border and you only have to walk 1km. On the way back you have to walk quite a distance in the crowds until you get to a public bus stop or taxi rank.

Of course, you can also generally organize a private driver through the hotel, who will be waiting for you at a fixed price!

Die Zeremonie findet in den Monaten März, April, Mai, Juni, Juli, August, September um 17.15 Uhr statt.

Im Oktober, November, Dezember, Januar und Februar findet sie um 16.15 Uhr statt.

Dies sind offizielle Uhrzeiten, wann die Parade beginnt. So genau lässt sich das nie sagen, da schon 2 Stunden vorher Menschen eintreffen und Programm stattfindet. Ziemlich genau bei Sonnenuntergang ist dann alles zu ende.

ENG The ceremony takes place in the months of March, April, May, June, July, August, September at 5:15 p.m.
In October, November, December, January and February it takes place at 4:15 p.m.
These are official times however when the parade is supposed to start. That can never be said exactly, because people arrive 2 hours before and the program takes place. Almost exactly at sunset everything is over.

Noch ein kurzer Tipp aus eigener Erfahrung. In dem unteren Bild seht ihr Tobias mit kniefreier Shorts. Die Checkpoints, die man durchläuft sind für Frauen und Männer getrennt. Das heißt, einen Großteil des Wegen des 1KM Fußweges sind wie getrennt gelaufen und haben immer wieder Augenkontakt gehalten. Irgendwann war Tobias dann mit Johanna verschwunden und ich habe richtig Panik bekommen. Polizisten hatten Tobias aus der Schlange rausgefischt, weil man zur Zeremonie nur lange Hosen tragen darf! Er wurde dann zu einem kleinen Kiosk gebracht und durfte für 6 Euro eine wirklich hässliche Hose kaufen. Ich hatte in der Zwischenzeit schon mit einem Bild auf meinem Handy angefangen nach beiden zu suchen und Soldaten zu fragen.....Glücklicherweise hatte ein Soldat das ganze beobachtet und mich dann zu ihnen gebracht.

ENG Another tip from my own experience. In the picture below you can see Tobias with knee-free shorts. The checkpoints that you go through are separate for women and men. This means that a large part of the 1KM footpath walked as if separated and kept eye contact again and again. At some point Tobias disappeared with Johanna and I really panicked. The police fished Tobias out of the queue because you can only wear long trousers to the ceremony! He was then taken to a small kiosk and allowed to buy really ugly pants for 6 euros. In the meantime, I had already started looking for both of them with a picture on my cell phone and asking soldiers..... Luckily a soldier had observed the whole thing and then brought me to them.
