Syrien ist ein eindrucksvolles Land. Du kennst das Land vermutlich nur aus den Medien...Eine Reise nach Syrien wird dich überraschen und Staunen lassen. Das Land ist bereit, Touristen zu empfangen. Die Menschen sind warmherzig und optimistisch, sie freuen sich auf dich und werden dich mit offenen Armen empfangen.

Syria is an impressive country. You probably only know the country from the media... A trip to Syria will surprise and amaze you. The country is ready to receive tourists. People are warm and optimistic, they look forward to you and will welcome you with open arms.

Dass es das Visum aktuell nur im Zusammenhang mit einer gebuchten Tour über ein lizenziertes syrisches Reiseunternehmen gibt, wollte ich anfangs nicht glauben. Über die syrische Botschaft vor Ort habe ich mich individuell um ein Touristenvisum beworben und auch die 70 USD Gebühr gezahlt. Leider wurde mein Antrag angelehnt. Nach dieser Enttäuschung habe ich mich entschlossen, über eine Reiseagentur zu gehen. Es gibt zahlreiche Anbieter. Wichtig zu wissen, dass die europäischen und britischen Anbieter (wie beispielsweise SovietTours oder UntamedBorders) im Endeffekt alle mit lokalen Reisebüros arbeiten. Wenn du also Geld sparen willst, kannst du auch direkt bei einem syrischen Unternehmen buchen, wie beispielsweise Golden Target Tours.

Nachträglich kann ich noch anmerken, dass eine Individualreise ohne Guide oder Fahrer aktuell ziemlich schwierig sein könnte....zumindest, wenn man über Land einreist. Es gibt alle paar Kilometer Checkpoints und ohne die geforderten Dokumente und Bestätigungen (und ohne fließendes Arabisch) kommt man hier nicht durch.

At first I didn't want to believe that the visa is currently only available in connection with a booked tour through a licensed Syrian travel company. I applied individually for a tourist visa through a local Syrian embassy and also paid the 70 USD fee. Unfortunately, my application was rejected. After this disappointment I decided to go through a travel agency. There are numerous providers. It is important to know that the European and British providers (such as SovietTours or UntamedBorders) all end up working with local travel agencies inside Syria. So if you want to save money, you can also book directly with a Syrian company, such as Golden Target Tours. And yes, I got my security clearance within 4 days. With that, you get the Visa stamped at the border.

In retrospect, I can still say that an individual trip without a guide or driver could currently be quite difficult....at least if you travel overland. There are checkpoints every few kilometers and it is impossible to get through without the required documents and confirmations (and without fluent Arabic).

Die meisten Gruppentouren starten im Libanon. Privattouren können auch in Jordanien begonnen werden. Eine Gruppenreise findet meistens mit 6 oder mehr Teilnehmenden statt, und der Preis sinkt dadurch deutlich. In einer privaten Tour hat man natürlich den Vorteil, dass man das Tempo und die Auswahl der Sehenswürigkeiten selbst bestimmen kann. Ich kann meinen Tourguide Ghassam sehr empfehlen. Ihr könnt ihn direkt kontaktieren. Mit hat besonders gut gefallen, dass er so flexibel war, je nach dem, was ich für Ideen und Wünsche für den Tag hatte. Außerdem hatte ich unerwartet auch zwei Nachmittage alleine für mich in Damaskus, um ganz eigenständig auf Erkundungs- und Shoppingtour zu gehen.

Most group tours start in Lebanon. Private tours can also be started in Jordan. A group trip usually takes place with 6 or more participants, and the price drops significantly as a result. In a private tour you have the advantage that you can determine the pace and the selection of the sights yourself. I can highly recommend my tour guide Ghassam. You can contact him directly. I especially liked that he was so flexible depending on what ideas and requests I had for the day. In addition, I unexpectedly had two afternoons to myself in Damascus to go exploring and shopping on my own.

Also, mir ist es wirklich noch nie passiert, dass mich jemand ganz direkt fragt, ob ich “immer Hijab trage und warum ich das Kopftuch nicht ablege.” In Syrien ist mir das drei Mal passiert. Für den Grenzübergang und die Fahrt über Land habe ich mich sehr wohl gefühlt, mich an den Dresscode der lokalen Bevölkerung anzupassen. Sprich, weite Kleidung und Kopftuch. In Damaskus tatsächlich kannst du anziehen, worin du dich komfortabel und wohl fühlst. Du wirst hier viele Frauen in Miniröcken oder Kleidern sehen. Vonseiten des Staates gibt es keine Kleidungsvorschriften, du bist frei zu tragen, was du willst. Nichtsdestotrotz besichtigst du vermutlich viele Moscheen und Kirchen ....von, daher ist es schon ratsam, auch Kleidung mitzubringen, die die Schultern und Knie bedecken.

Well, it's really never happened to me that someone asks me directly if I "always wear hijab and why I don't take off the headscarf." It happened to me three times in Syria. For the border crossing and the overland drive, I felt very comfortable adapting to the dress code of the local population. In other words, loose clothing and a headscarf. Indeed, in Damascus you can wear what you feel comfortable and comfortable in. You will see many women here in mini skirts or dresses. There are no dress codes from the state, you are free to wear whatever you want. Nonetheless, you'll probably visit a lot of mosques and churches...from so it's a good idea to bring clothes that cover your shoulders and knees as well.

Bis auf einige wenige Landesteile im Norden kann man (wie ich gehört habe) das ganze Land besuchen: Homs, Aleppo, Hama, Tartus, Latakia und natürlich Damaskus. Wenn du über eine offizielle Reiseagentur buchst, sind die Orte, die du sehen wirst, mit Sorgfalt ausgewählt. Du kannst deinem Reiseveranstalter vertrauen, dass dieser nur mit überprüften Mitarbeitenden, Fahrern und Guides arbeitet. Ich habe mich im Großen und Ganzen sicher gefühlt. Es ist ein Unterschied, ob du als Tourist mit ausländischen Pass für ein paar Tage ins Land kommst oder als Syrer aus dem Ausland zurückkehren willst. In vielen Fällen ist das bis heute für Syrerinnen und Syrer aus Sicherheitsgründen noch nicht möglich. Ich habe zu dieser Frage sehr viel recherchiert und vor allem auch unterschiedliche Meinungen eingeholt. Zum Beispiel von Syrern selbst, von Menschen, die beim Militär arbeiten, und von anderen Ausländern, die in Damaskus für eine NGO arbeiten. When you book through an official travel agency, the places you will see are chosen with care. You can trust your tour operator to only work with verified staff, drivers and guides. Overall I felt safe. There is a difference between coming to the country for a few days as a tourist with a foreign passport and returning from abroad as a Syrian. In many cases, this is still not possible for Syrians for security reasons. I did a lot of research on this question and above all got different opinions.
